Something over six thousand hymns

John's younger brother, in the Holy Club with him and in Georgia with him, who had his own conversion three days before John's and who wrote for the rest of his life.

Why it matters

The hymns did the work of teaching a largely unlettered movement its theology, which is why Methodism could be doctrinally serious without being a reading culture. A good many are still sung weekly across every English-speaking tradition — Hark! the herald angels sing, Love divine, all loves excelling, And can it be. He opposed his brother's ordinations and wanted Methodism to stay inside the Church of England, and unlike John he got the argument he wanted only after he was dead.
