A mission that dressed and lived Chinese
An English doctor who went to China at twenty-one and founded the China Inland Mission in 1865, aimed at the interior provinces rather than the treaty ports.
Why it matters
He required his missionaries to wear Chinese dress and grow the queue, which other missions found scandalous and which was the point: he thought the gospel should not arrive as a European import under gunboat protection. He accepted workers without formal education and, unusually, sent single women into the interior. He also refused to solicit funds. The mission lost many of its people, and Taylor his wife and several children; fifty-eight of its missionaries and twenty-one children were killed in the Boxer Rising, and he declined all compensation from the Chinese government.
