The Reformation in Zurich, and the split over the supper
People's priest at the Great Minster in Zurich, who began in 1519 preaching straight through Matthew instead of the lectionary, and carried the city council with him into a reformation more thoroughgoing than Luther's.
Why it matters
He stripped the churches of images and organs and held that the eucharist is a memorial — the point on which he and Luther failed to agree at Marburg in 1529, dividing the Reformation permanently into Lutheran and Reformed. His own radicals broke with him in 1525 over infant baptism and became the Anabaptists, whom Zurich then persecuted. He was killed as a chaplain at the battle of Kappel, fighting Catholic cantons.
