Community of goods, and death for organising it

A Tyrolean hatmaker who organised refugee Anabaptists arriving in Moravia into settled communities holding everything in common, and who was arrested, tortured and burned at Innsbruck after three years of it.

Why it matters

The communal economy he established has been practised with only one substantial interruption since 1528, which makes it the longest-running communal economy in the West. His letters to the communities survive. The Hutterites, expelled repeatedly across four countries before reaching the Dakotas in the 1870s, carry his name.
