the Titans , a race of gods placed beneath Tartarus, (Iliad by Homer) (where two are named—;Iapetus and Cronus), accusative to (Hesiod), six sons and six daughters of Uranus and Gaia; hurled from Olympus into nether darkness, (Hesiod): other names are given by later Poets, as Atlas, (Aeschulus Tragicus); Prometheus, (Sophocles Tragicus); Θέμις (Aeschulus Tragicus); and in Lat. Poets Titan is the Sun-god. The oldest derivation of the name is given in (Hesiod), the stretchers, strivers; others connect it with τίτας (from τίνω); avengers. (ML)
