to rain

1. to send rain, to rain , Ζεὺς ὗε (Homer), etc.; ὁ θεὸς ὕει (Herdotus Historicus):—;then, the nom. being omitted, ὕει used impersonal , Lat. pluit , it rains, (Hesiod); ὕοντος when it is raining , (Aristophanes Comicus); ὕοντος πολλῷ as it was raining heavily, (Xenophon Historicus) 2. with accusative loci, ἑπτὰ ἐτέων οὐκ ὗε τὴν Θήρην for seven years it did not rain on Thera, (Herdotus Historicus):—;hence in Pass., with future middle to be rained on , (Odyssey by Homer); ὕσθησαν αἱ Θῆβαι Thebes was rained upon , i. e. it rained there, (Herdotus Historicus); ἡ χώρη ὕεται, i. e. it rains in the country, (Herdotus Historicus) 3. with accusative cognate , ὗσε χρυσόν it rained gold, (Pindar); καινὸν ἀεὶ Ζεὺς ὕει ὕδωρ (Aristophanes Comicus) (ML)
