فَقَالَ شَاوُلُ لِحَامِلِ سِلَاحِهِ: «ٱسْتَلَّ سَيْفَكَ وَٱطْعَنِّي بِهِ لِئَلَّا يَأْتِيَ هَؤُلَاءِ ٱلْغُلْفُ وَيُقَبِّحُونِي». فَلَمْ يَشَأْ حَامِلُ سِلَاحِهِ لِأَنَّهُ خَافَ جِدًّا. فَأَخَذَ شَاوُلُ ٱلسَّيْفَ وَسَقَطَ عَلَيْهِ.
و شاؤل به سلاحدار خود گفت: «شمشير را بکش و به من فرو بر، مبادا اين نامختونان بيايند و مرا افتضاح کنند.» اما سلاحدارش نخواست زيرا که بسيار مي ترسيد؛ پس شاؤل شمشير را گرفته بر آن افتاد.
