Formed in 1845 when the national Baptist mission board refused to appoint a slaveholder as a missionary and Baptists in the South withdrew to form their own convention. It became the largest Protestant body in the United States. The convention repudiated that founding in 1995, apologising for slavery and for its opposition to civil rights.

What marks it out

The Cooperative Program, a single pooled fund through which autonomous congregations support seminaries and missions together — the largest such arrangement in Protestantism, and the practical answer to how independent churches act at scale. Congregations remain self-governing and the convention cannot bind them, only decline to seat them.
