وَسَمِعَ أَخُوهُ ٱلْأَكْبَرُ أَلِيآبُ كَلَامَهُ مَعَ ٱلرِّجَالِ، فَحَمِيَ غَضَبُ أَلِيآبَ عَلَى دَاوُدَ وَقَالَ: «لِمَاذَا نَزَلْتَ؟ وَعَلَى مَنْ تَرَكْتَ تِلْكَ ٱلْغُنَيْمَاتِ ٱلْقَلِيلَةَ فِي ٱلْبَرِّيَّةِ؟ أَنَا عَلِمْتُ كِبْرِيَاءَكَ وَشَرَّ قَلْبِكَ، لِأَنَّكَ إِنَّمَا نَزَلْتَ لِكَيْ تَرَى ٱلْحَرْبَ».

A kad je Eliab, njegov najstariji brat, čuo kako se razgovara s ljudima, usplamtje gnjevom na Davida pa mu reče: “A što si ti došao ovamo? Kome si ostavio ono malo ovaca u pustinji? Znam ja tvoju drskost i zlobu tvoga srca: došao si da vidiš bitku!”

Als aber sein ältester bruder Eliab hörte, wie er mit den Männern sprach, geriet Eliab in heftigen Zorn über David und rief: Wozu bist du eigentlich hergekommen und wem hast du jene paar Schafe in der Steppe überlassen? Ich kenne deine Frechheit und deinen boshaften Sinn: ja, um den Krieg anzusehen, bist du hergekommen!
Aber Eliab, sein ältester Bruder, hörte ihn mit den Männern reden. Da entbrannte Eliabs Zorn wider David, und er sprach: Warum bist du herabgekommen? Und bei wem hast du dort in der Wüste die wenigen Schafe gelassen? Ich kenne deine Vermessenheit und deines Herzens Bosheit wohl; denn du bist herabgekommen, um den Kampf zu sehen!

Quod cum audisset Eliab frater ejus major, loquente eo cum aliis, iratus est contra David, et ait: Quare venisti, et quare dereliquisti pauculas oves illas in deserto? Ego novi superbiam tuam, et nequitiam cordis tui: quia ut videres prælium, descendisti.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע אֱלִיאָב֙ אָחִ֣יו הַגָּד֔וֹל בְּדַבְּר֖וֹ אֶל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וַיִּֽחַר־אַף֩ אֱלִיאָ֨ב בְּדָוִ֜ד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ לָמָּה־זֶּ֣ה יָרַ֗דְתָּ וְעַל־מִ֨י נָטַ֜שְׁתָּ מְעַ֨ט הַצֹּ֤אן הָהֵ֨נָּה֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר אֲנִ֧י יָדַ֣עְתִּי אֶת־זְדֹנְךָ֗ וְאֵת֙ רֹ֣עַ לְבָבֶ֔ךָ כִּ֗י לְמַ֛עַן רְא֥וֹת הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה יָרָֽדְתָּ׃
