Attested outside scripture and archaeologically. His title in the inscription is prefect, matching the New Testament usage rather than the later procurator.
Attestation. The Pilate Stone, a dedicatory inscription found at Caesarea Maritima in 1961, naming "Pontius Pilatus, Prefect of Judaea"; also Tacitus, Philo and Josephus.
